Canadian wireless customers number over 19 million

While the breadth of Canadian wireless users hasn’t reached the level of the U.S., the market is certainly heating up. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association has announced that Canada saw 523,000 new subscribers during the third quarter of 2007. Now, that is about half of what U.S. companies Verizon and AT&T added during the quarter — but it’s more than No. 3 carrier Sprint added. This brings the number of Canadian wireless customers over 19 million.
“Canadians remain among the world’s highest users of wireless voice
services at an average of 400 minutes per month,” said CWTA President & CEO
Peter Barnes. “As well, the strong customer growth the industry continues to
experience is directly mirrored by Canadians’ rapid adoption of wireless data
services such as text messaging, e-mail, mobile Web browsing and a vast array
of multimedia entertainment content.”
All this, despite astronomical data rates. As that comes down, we expect the Canadian wireless penetration to increase. It’s currently at 60 percent, and up to 80 percent in major metropolises.

Maybe now the Canadian providers will stop charging such astronomical rates compared to American providers citing “low demand for cellular services in Canada†as the reason.
