Verizon playing ball at Spring Training

Posted by Joe P on February 18, 2008

I love baseball. It’s that simple. I follow my team every day of the year. I’m up on most of the other teams too. From April through October, my girlfriend hates me because I end up watching some 250 baseball games. So when there’s a baseball-related cell phone story, you’d better believe I’m all over it. Verizon is the subject today, as they’ve made their EV-DO Rev. A available to all Spring Training sites, whether in Florida for the Grapefruit League or Arizona for the Cactus League.

This is actually an excellent development for the reporters on hand for the games. These major league teams are playing at minor league facilities, and for the most part the press area is tiny. Some of them might have Wi-Fi, but the best guess is that most do not. Yet they need some kind of Internet connection.

By providing EV-DO Rev. A, Verizon is giving these reporters a chance to file reports with ease. And since many beat reporters are blogging nowadays, it gives them a means to communicate with the team’s fanbase instantly. Without this upgrade, that might not have been possible.

This is also great for fans, who can use their Verizon Wireless mobile Internet devices to catch up on scores and stats from the rest of the Spring Training season.
