Motorola Sidekick sales suspended
Posted by Joe P on November 19, 2007
If you were to buy a Sidekick Slide, the new Motorola-manufactured offering from T-Mobile, you’d expect it to, you know, slide. Right? You wouldn’t expect it, for instance, to power off when you use the slide mechanism. Would you? No, we thought not. Well, T-Mobile and Motorola have confirmed that this is in fact a problem, and as a result are suspending sales of the devices. Note that this has nothing to do with the other two new Sidekick models, the iD and LX, which are manufactured by Sharp.
Motorola is reportedly studying the problem in order to come up with some sort of fix.
The hope, of course, is that the fix is simple. Simple enough, at least, that it can be performed in-store at a T-Mobile location. Otherwise, it’s going to get rather costly. Motorola and/or T-Mobile would then have to pay for all Sidekick patrons to mail in the device, pay for the fix, and pay for the return postage. Not cheap at all.
For now, customers are encouraged to call T-Mobile Customer Care (1-800-266-2459) to report any problems, or to speak to a T-Mobile sales rep. There are supposedly a few “currently available options,” but we wonder if any of them will be remotely satisfactory.
More on this as the announcements come.
