Is T-Mobile headed to Canada?

Deutshe Telekom, the parent company of carrier T-Mobile, has telecommunications interests all around the world. They’re the largest carrier in Germany, the third largest in the UK, and fourth largest in the U.S. And then they have a presence in eight other countries: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, and Slovakia. Word comes now, through a tipster to Boy Genius Report, that the company might be moving into Canada. This is in no way confirmed, so should be treated as a rumor for the moment. But it’s a rather large rumor.
BGR has a number of details, the first of which is that Deutsche Telekom has been approved for financing and a protocol agreement. They’ve also been pre-approved to test roaming, cell tower reception, and international data agreements. I’m not sure what “pre-approved” means in this sense. I just hope it doesn’t mean the same thing as it means with credit cards.
Further, BGR speculates that data rates would plummet once T-Mobile enters the fray. This is because Rogers Wireless has a stranglehold on the GSM market. The rumored plan — after launch in 2009 — would be to introduce an unlimited BlackBerry plan for $75 per month, which very much undercuts the competition.
Not only do they plan to use the name T-Mobile, which Deutsche Telekom already owns in Canada, but they also plan to offer a few of the neat-o device they have here, like the Sidekick.
Clearly, this is something to keep up with. If true, it could really open up the mobile landscape north of the border.
