Overview

Sprint Nextel, one of the oldest telecommunications companies in the United States, prides itself on providing innovation and excellence for its clients. Sprint and Nextel merged in 2004, becoming Sprint Nextel, one of the largest wireless providers in the country.

Pros: Sprint Nextel has a variety of plans for users to choose from, including six individual plans, six family plans, and eleven direct connect plans. Every voice plan has unlimited nights and weekends for no extra cost, although if you want early nights and weekends, you’ll have to pay $5 or $10 extra per month, depending on which plan you choose and how much earlier you want to start. All family plans can have up to five lines included.

Cons: There are activation fees of $36 for each plan, but these are sometimes waived in online-only specials. Termination fees are a bit more expensive than some other companies. Most plans require a two-year agreement.

Detailed Provider Information

You get unlimited mobile-to-mobile and unlimited nights and weekends starting at 6pm, 7pm, or 9pm, depending on the plan and whether you choose to pay extra for an earlier start time. You also get domestic long distance.

There are six family plans. These range in minutes from 550 to unlimited, and the price range is $59.99 to $189.98. You get unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited nationwide long distance, and the plan includes two lines. You can choose to add up to three lines (for a total of five lines) for each plan for an extra $9.99 a month per line, or $19.99 for the data plan. You also get unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling.

Sprint Nextel also has a basic plan. This offers you 200 monthly minutes at $29.99 a month. It includes unlimited nights and weekends starting at 9 pm, but you can start at 7 pm or 6 pm for an extra $5 or $10 per month, respectively.

Sprint Nextel offers a Business Essentials category. There are six plans in this category, with minutes ranging from 400 monthly to 4000. The plans also have domestic long distance and the ability to share minutes between Sprint Nextel phones.

Never Go with Sprint March 5th, 2012

I have been a loyal sprint customer for over 2 years, I always pay my bill on time and had never had or caused an issues UNTIL now. After my experience with sprint over the last week I would never suggest this company to anyone, my HTC EVO's charger port disconnected from the mother board, I took it to a sprint repair store after waiting for almost 45 min they informed that they could not fix it there because it is internal and I would have to but a claim in with insurance dept. and would have to pay a $100 deductible for the phone. I would have no problem paying this deductible if it where something that I had caused to damage the phone HOWEVER this was not the case. So I called sprint after spending over a hour on the phone with them a manager told me that he was going to but in a claim as an advance exchange and waive the $100 deductible. I was happy with this BUT I called back in 2 days later to make sure he had done this however he did not nor did he note my account. SO after I spent another 1 1/2 hours on the phone I was told a supervisor would contact me within 24 hours .. that never happened so I called back again 2 days later after another hour on the phone the issue was still not resolved which then my phone died and so I had to call back again the next day spent another 45 min on the phone where they told me because the manager never put the notes in the account that they could not waive the $100 fee, which I told them at that point that I had spent over 4 hours on the phone with sprint over the last few days and that I would be cheaper for me to just cancel my account, which they said they had no problem doing. So all in all I will be cancelling my account due to the fact that if it’s that they have no value for their customers especially the ones that always pay their accounts on time and not to mention pay for on of the highest plans they have. BUT unfortunately for them my company also has all 120 of our company phones with them and after all this they will most likely be loosing that account as well . SO if you are thinking about getting sprint I would highly suggest looking at your other options, find a company that actually values their customers

Sprint-Nextel If you are looking to change/start service with a different carrier, 1
Gary Munson August 19th, 2011

If you are looking to change/start service with a different carrier, STAY AWAY FROM SPRINT. In a word, they are HORRIBLE.

I am a four (4) year customer of mobile broadband service. In that four years Sprint has be substandard -really pathetic - on every single issue. Here is a short summary.

I contracted for mobile broadband on a 2 year agreement. At the end of the 2 years my equipment stopped working. I took the card to my local Sprint office - who informed me that they could not repair it, they had no replacement for it - and, if I wanted to continue my service, I would have to buy a new card. I did so.

Fast-forward 1 1/2 years - I receive a billing statement in the mail with an amount 4 times my normal bill. I call Sprint customer service - and am informed that my unlimited plan had been changed to a capped usage plan - without signature or agreement - when I bought the new equipment.

The rep told me he would remove the charges and this would never happen again. 2 months later it did.

I virtually never use my broadband account. I have DSL at work - and use this, instead. I remove the card from the computer when I am not using it - and no one else uses my card. Yet, somehow, I exceed the "generous" cap that Sprint provides.

I terminated service. Sprint is charging me a $100 early termination fee. No contract - no agreement, yet a $100 termination fee.

Please do not make the same mistake I did. Stay FAR away from this company.

I wanted to cancel my service and because I already went a few days into the next service month, they said they couldn't cancel until the end of the service month. They said it was in the Terms of Service, like anyone has the time to read those! Anyway, I went with Verizon and they will prorate your service and credit you from cancellation date to the end of that period. That sounds fair to me, Sprint is more about greed than Customer Service!

unhappykathy April 22nd, 2011

My first cell was nextel. No reception where I lived, so I took it back. They talked me into an antenna booster...this was during the two week trial period. It still did not work. So, I came back again. Then they said sorry, I owed them $400 to get out of the contract. I noted that I had already been buy w/in the two weeks. They did not care. I assume the phone was resold. I wanted nothing else to do with them. They had a collection agency call and put a nasty blurb on my credit rating. This was resold 3x to keep it on the credit bureaus. I refused to pay for a service and a phone I could not use. It eventually went away after 8 years (not on the credit bureaus)...and a number change = no more calls. Then, I dared to try a Sprint phone....no reception...took it back the next day...no contract. Now their collection agency (since they bought Nextel) keeps calling us. It a nutshell, no reception, never sign a contract, or they will hound you down for ten years. She says she will call all day and send us mail. For a phone I tried to use over 10 years ago, could not get reception, took back....and nothing has improved since. Buyer beware!!!

Be careful and examine the phone you select carefully for it's warranty!!!!
Simply said, make sure that it is warantied for at least 2 years. If it is only one year pass on the phone you select.
Situation is this, one year and two months after getting my NEW phone, it went kaput. Thought it was batteryl...nope! Sprint said phone crashed. New Phone $220....So I cancelled service, no phone no service... right?.....wrong! bought Net 10 and went on my way...Then collections letters started. Seeems they consider this an "Early Termination" and charged me a fee...No phone...no service just bills. WHATCH OUT!!!!!!

I'm part of a family plan in which my brother-in-law holds the reins. He instituted a change from T-Mobile (which was excellent) because Sprint is cheaper. But there have been reception problems (which I never had with T-Mobile). Although I live about a 1/4 mile from a tower, my house is in a dead zone. Sprint provided a signal booster at no charge, but I still suffer dropped calls occasionally. Other than that, I would rate Sprint as "adequate", which is to say that Sprint is good but not great.

I will have to say that I was with Nextel for years and did not have much complaint but when I had to cancel due to my husbamds health and being put on disablity they have no compassion. I took the fact that I had an early disconnect fee-I told them that I would pay it as I could (and I will), but that sorry company sent it to collections after a month. I was a customer for 7years plus and thats the graditude you get with them. They would not even set up small payments with me but as of right now when I can pay a little they have no problem taking it from me! I have always payed my bill on time and this is what I get-

Kimberly April 26th, 2010

I signed up with Sprint over a year ago and I have been really impressed with the service, particularly with their calling network.

Sprint advertises the only 4G network and I have to say that with the right Smart Phone, the speed and graphics are really amazing. Their $69 everything unlimited plan saves me from my overage fees as well as nearly $40 a month more I had to pay to keep an IPhone with AT&T.

Their phone promotions are great and the general selection is better than I have encounted – I really love the abduance of Smart Phones at reasonable prices.

The best thing is honestly their calling network –I have great reception anywhere I go and in Miami that’s something. But I know that having this plan and a great phone, in this day and age, is lucky.

But there is an option being offered by Boost’s sister company, Virgin Mobile via Sprint, that has real potential to help a lot of people and should be getting more coverage.

Their “Assurance Wireless” program is being in offered in five states and exclusively to low income, qualifying families and its an amazing deal. Qualifers can get both a phone and 200 minutes, with no fees or contract, for free with the potential to expand their program at. 10 a minute. While the program is new, I can only hope it will expand to more states and people who could also use a plan like this.

I might not be low-income, but the savings would totally help me. While free is a bit much to ask of already loyal customers, maybe Sprint and its parents companies could offer something like this for $10 for everyone – new and old customers alike. Times are tough and having a cell phone is a must so click here for Sprint president’s email address: http://assurancewireless.webs.com and let him know that everyone could use these savings

Sprint is great... IF you never need customer service!! I was a faithful customer of Sprint for 8+ years. In December 2008, I contacted them and asked if they could "pro-rate" my contract cancellation fee because I had read that many companies were doing so in light of the number of lawsuits pending RE: unlawfulness of cancellation fees. I was told my termination fee would be $10 per month for the remaining 6 mo/ of my contract. I called back a week later to set up termination date and REAFFIRMED $60 termination fee with a DIFFERENT customer service agent. Got my last bill- $250 termination fee. I have been fighting with Sprint for over 7 months now and they have turned my acct over to a collection agency. They DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER- and you'd better get EVERYTHING IN WRITING!!! Funny, they state they record every phone call for quality service but no one could research my calls and verify that I was told my termination fee would be $60.00. Convenient, huh?

I've been a Sprint customer off and on since 2001. The first time, after being a customer for three years, I decided I wanted a new phone. I was told I had to wait 4 months for a rebate check after buying a new phone, whereas new customers received the rebate instantly. I was told that, if I have a problem with that, I should find another carrier...by three separate CSRs. I told them to cancel my contract and switched to Nextel. They didn't cancel my contract, I had to call the CSRs again 3 months later to have them cancel my account retroactively and remove fees.

Nextel was then purchased by Sprint and my service there went to crap too, making it clear they wanted Nextel customers to get on the Sprint CDMA network. I did so, begrudgingly. When I purchased a new phone, paid for 100% with cash no rebates, they extended my contract based on the activation.

Then, three years after the first contract, I get a bill from a collections agency for $27.00 in late fees for the previously canceled contract, though they never sent me a bill of any kind.

Stay away from Sprint. They're a nightmare.

I am not happy with sprint at all, have been with them for about five years now, loyal costumer here… but that loyalty has degraded, disintegrated due to their horrifying costumer service… I am not one to play games and have very little time… I feel like they waste my time in the stores… they can never solve my problems… when I call I always get somebody that it’s hard to hear or understand, doesn’t understand the issue that I am calling about or knows how to help me, their phones are not up to par with other providers… the reps lie to you and are rude, they are everything you don’t want out of a customer service experience… their billing statements are always wrong… not kidding… and by no small margin… they are expensive… mostly I just pay it to avoid dealing for an hour with their costumer rep… they don’t do anything to retain their loyal customers… I am just tired… just waiting for the contract to be over because I don’t feel like paying their 200 bucks early cancelation fee… which is outrageous… my advice to all would be costumer… Do yourself a favor and avoid my monthly nightmare…

I've been a Sprint customer for about 3 years now, and I've never had a problem with them. They seem to have plenty of coverage (very few "black hole" areas), and their customer service is pretty solid. Recently my boyfriend and I were charged for extra text messages when we shouldn't have been (we have a joint plan that allows for unlimited text messages each month), and when we called to complain about it, the rep apologized and removed the extra charges immediately.

I know a lot of people have had horror stories about Sprint (but really, isn't that true for all providers?), but I've never had a major issue with them, so I'm content to keep using them.

Shari January 9th, 2008

I have been a Sprint customer for about 8 or 9 years. I pretty much feel apathetic towards all the cell phone companies so I have not had a reason to change companies, but feel that Sprint does not give me too much incentive to stay either. You would think they would reward customer loyalty, but they really don't. As far the service, reception is pretty good. I used to get a lot more dropped calls than I do now, so that is good. But I am also frustrated that they force you to purchase new phones by making the service on old ones obsolete. I also am not completely satisfied with the phone choices available. It seems like other cell phone companies have a better variety of phones with better/ more features. Since Sprint ropes you into a contract, it is usually inconvenient or impossible to switch providers without paying the fees. So I have stuck with Sprint, mostly because I don't beleive the grass is greener with any other company either.
