AT&T is the largest telecommunications company in the United States, and the only carrier of the Apple iPhone. If you’re looking for a lot of choice in plans and phones, you’ve found it with this provider. Be careful not to go over your plan's alloted minutes – you’ll pay anywhere from $0.35 to $0.45 per minute for overages.

T-Mobile – The magenta company is more than just flashy; they also have the most plans of any company reviewed on Going Cellular. Their prices aren’t bad, either; however, don’t go over your minutes or you’ll pay a high charge.

Sprint Nextel – Sprint Nextel offers a lot of features, but they’re not always standard with every plan. They make up for this by offering unlimited nights and weekends on every plan. They also recently added mobile broadband to their Simply Everything plan, at no extra charge.

Alltel – Alltel offers My Circle, a program that allows you to call your favorite one, five, ten, or twenty users as much as you want, anytime. They also offer unlimited nights and weekends in all plans. However, adding additional lines to a national plan costs a whopping $20 per line, per month.

US Cellular – The company is a small, regional carrier, but offers a wide variety of plans and services. Be aware that while they previously didn't require an activation fee, they now charge $30 for new accounts. On the upside, they also previously didn't offer data plans, but now accommodate Blackberries and Windows Mobile-enabled phones.

Verizon – After its acquisition of Alltel, Verizon is now the largest wireless provider in the United States. They have a new Friends & Family plan that offers unlimited calling to any 10 numbers, but only on the Nationwide Family Share Plan with 1400 Anytime Minutes or more.
