Yahoo! announces oneSearch speech recognition

Posted by Joe P on April 2, 2008

A few months ago, we talked about how Yahoo! Go can enhance your mobile internet experience. Today, they took that a step further, with the announcement of oneSearch 2.0. The overall idea is to provide better answers through search, as opposed to traditional search results consisting of web links. To accomplish this, Yahoo! is opening up to publishers, allowing them to integrate their relevant content that will provide consumers with highly relevant, targeted information that addresses the intent of the search.

Perhaps the greatest enhancement in oneSearch 2.0 is the introduction of voice-based search. So instead of typing in your query, you can speak it right into your phone, and Yahoo will translate and deliver the results you’re looking for. This is a partnership with Vlingo, a company specializing in speech-to-text translations.

They have also integrated predictive text completion, which delivers popular search terms after you type in just a few letters. In addition, oneSearch will provide contextual recommendations that will help drill down your search to be as specific as possible. So if you search for general terms, oneSearch will recommend specific queries related to the original.

Marco Boerries, executive vice president, Connected Life, Yahoo!, spoke enthusiastically about the open application programming interface (API), which allows developers from all over work on the content produced by oneSearch. “Openness is really key,” he said. “No one carrier can drive that alone. It’s too complex.”

Boerries also spoke to how oneSearch is differentiated from other searches at the market. “It’s about understanding the intent of the query,” he said.

The application is available now for select BlackBerry devices, including the 8800 series, the Curve, and the Pearl in the U.S. at m.yahoo.com/voice.
