Helio goes full-feature with YouTube

Posted by Joe P on December 12, 2007

There are tons of handsets on various operators that have access to YouTube. But few of them, other than the iPhone, offer a full-featured YouTube. Helio has joined the iPhone’s ranks, though, as it should. The Ocean — a device we’ve said is as good or better than the iPhone — now offers a full-feature YouTube application. Not only does this allow users to access more videos, but it also allows for two-click uploading. Plus, you can use the on-board camera for video and upload directly that way.

What makes this Helio announcement a little different, and a little more interesting, is that access to nearly all of the YouTube library is delivered alongside a host of community and uploading features that will allow users to enjoy a very similar (and in some ways richer) experience to that of YouTube on their PC.

We found that interesting, because it seems that we’re taking leaps and bounds to make the mobile Internet a facsimile of the PC Internet. This is good in some ways. It will, for instance, encourage more users. With more people connected, more opportunities exist for growth.

However, we think it’s a mistake to neglect the uniqueness of the mobile Internet. Yes, the similar interface is helpful, but we’d like to see some companies take advantage of the platform, rather than try to convert everything to the format in which it exists on a home computer.
