Mobile Notes: Verizon Open, White Spaces, Hotspot @Home

We know it’s terrible to drink and drive. We also have been learning that it’s not exactly safe to be using your mobile phone, especially without a hands-free device, while driving. So it stands to reason that you clearly shouldn’t be doing both. One woman from the UK did. After drinking too much and while talking on her phone, the woman struck another vehicle. Its driver later died of the injuries. We send our condolences to Melanie Simon Lee’s family. We also urge everyone who reads this to A) never drink and drive, because that’s just stupid, and B) invest in a Bluetooth. You still might be distracted while driving, but it cuts down a ton from pressing a handset up to your ear.
Remember Verizon’s Open Development program? It seems like forever since we’ve heard something from them. Now we’re getting word of the first certified programs. These come from SupplyNet, “a manufacturer and developer of inventory logistics systems primarily used in wholesale and retail applications.” It’s pretty technical, but you can check out Verizon’s press release for the full scoop.
The FCC will perform further tests on white spaces, the pieces of spectrum that lie between the main signal. The idea is to open up more outlets for wireless devices to connect to the Internet. While it has the broadcast industry’s disapproval, it would be a welcome development for consumers.
For those who have or want T-Mobile’s Hotspot @Home, there are a couple of new handsets available. As with most of the Hotspot lineup, they are rather midrange phones, and neither has 3G capabilities. We’re looking at the Nokia 6301, and the Samsung t339. They both, however, have music playing capabilities, and feature expandable memory slots.
