Mobile Notes: Trapster, Teen talk, Palm Centro, Bluetooth, AT&T

Posted by Joe P on June 3, 2008

There’s such a contradiction in my head. Summer is upon us, which means I love driving with the windows down and the music blaring. And yeah, I wanna go fast. Problems are 1) gas prices are high, and driving fast eats more fuel, and 2) the po po loves to hand out speeding tickets. While I can’t do jack about the first one, it looks like a new social network can help with the second. Dubbed Trapster, it allows users to point out where speed traps lie, so that others can avoid them. If you speed, you best check it out.

I thought this was settled months ago, but Reuters is reporting that AT&T has settled its third party billing suit. Thankfully, deceived customers will be getting a refund. And yeah, while part of the blame should be on the scamming third parties and gullible customers, AT&T’s culpability is not vetting companies it allows to charge directly to customers’ bills.

Ads delivered by Bluetooth? Intera Group gave it a shot, and they got a decent response rate. Once you walk into the vicinity of one of these ads, you’re asked whether you want to view it or not. Of those who did view it, 25 percent actually used it. The company assures security in their Bluetooth transfers, though I’m not telling you to believe them. You have to be in “discoverable” mode in order to receive the prompt for the ad.

Looks like Palm is picking up some smartphone market share on the heels of the Centro, not the Treo. Apple was the company affected most, dropping 7.5 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007.

File this under: duh. Kids will spend more time on the phone in the summer. Well, considering they’re not in school all day, I can’t see any reason why they wouldn’t spend more time on the phone. What I find interesting is that one in five kids would give up TV, radio, video games, or going to the mall before giving up their cell phone. As if that hasn’t inspired 10 quadrillion ideas already.
