Mobile Notes: T-Mobile, Sprint, SMS, Global cell users

Posted by Joe P on May 27, 2008

So today, I managed to keep the iPhone out of Mobile Notes. You’d figure that with the release date creeping closer and closer, we’d be seeing an avalanche of information. But not on this Tuesday morning. Perhaps tomorrow. Heck, the Law of Averages pretty much says that we have to see something rumory tomorrow, right?

  • Looks like T-Mobile will be debuting a new portal in the next week or so. You’ll be able to store pictures, contacts, and MyFaves, in addition to creating mobile backups. Could this be like a T-Mobile social network? Also with T-Mobile, the Sidekick Gekko user manual has been leaked.
  • Bunch of phone releases for Sprint in June. The Instinct is on the list, but that seems to be the only real high end offerings of the month. Everything else retails for $299.99 or under.
  • At the end of 2007, there were 3.3 billion cell users worldwide. The International Telecommunications Union says that we’re looking at a 22 percent yearly growth rate. With countries in Africa, as well as India and China, gaining access to cell technology, we could even see that rate grow in 2008.
  • Verizon sent 58 billion text messages through its network in the first quarter of 2008. This segues into a piece on how we need to be more safe, and not text and drive. You can say it all you want, but people are going to continue to do it. $100+ fines haven’t kept people around me from talking on the phones while driving.
