Mobile Notes: Android, Recycling, iPhone ID

Posted by Joe P on July 8, 2008

We start off today’s edition of Mobile Notes with an unconfirmed rumor regarding the purchase of an Apple iPhone 3G. Here’s the supposed deal: You’ll have to present a valid U.S. government ID and a social security number in order to purchase the phone. Now, here’s the quirk. Normally, both of these would be required for the activation of a new line. Postpaid cell service is a form of credit, so they’re going to run a check on you. The question is, then, of whether this applies to existing AT&T customers who simply want to buy the iPhone and put it on their current plan. If so, that would royally suck. That information is supposedly already on file. So why require it again when you purchase the iPhone 3G?

A heavy rumor making its rounds is that T-Mobile will feature an Android phone when it launches its nationwide 3G network. As we learned yesterday, this is rumored to be an October thing, though we have seen delays from T-Mobile in the past. The old rumor is that T-Mobile would have an Android phone by the fourth quarter. While October 1 is technically in that timeframe, that seems awful early in the period. In any case, this is another rumor, though certainly a juicy one.

Speaking of T-Mo, if you’re looking to get out of your contract because of the hike in SMS fees to 20 cents per, check out this guide at The Boy Genius Report. They break things down perfectly.

Sad but true: only three percent of people recycle their old phones. Thankfully, they mostly just sit around in drawers rather than in landfills. Three quarters of people didn’t even think to recycle their phone, and a near majority were unaware that such programs even existed. Check out our guide on how to recycle your mobile phone.
