Verizon working with Timbaland to make music

Gold album. Platinum album. Double-platinum album. Mobile album. Yeah, that last one doesn’t seem to fit in really well. But it might just be the direction we’re headed — or one of them. Verizon Wireless has announced a deal with producer Timbaland to create the world’s first “mobile album.” Of course, there could be an older mobile album that none of us know about — but I know that if there is, someone will email me with it and call me an idiot. Anyway, it will be available exclusively through V Cast, and will be dropping throughout 2008.
What I’m finding strange from the source article is that it refers to Timbaland as Verizon’s “mobile producer in residence.” Hmm. Interesting title. Anyway, they’re doing kind of a hybrid promotion here. not only will Timbaland produce these mobile tracks, but he’ll tour on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio Bus, performing songs at various destinations across the country.
Each month, he’ll create a track with a different artist. I haven’t seen a list yet, but it’ll be interesting to see what he does with each emcee. The artists will come from Interscope records, if that helps narrow it down for you.
So what does Timbaland think about this? “…every place don’t get a CD (but) everybody has a mobile phone.” I’m going to leave that one alone. Yes, everyone has a mobile phone. No, everywhere you go doesn’t necessarily sell CDs. But…eh, nevermind.
He’s also pumped to be the first to this medium. “Just producing a mobile album has never been done. I’m the first to ever do it,” he says.
No word on when the first track will drop, but it will be $1.99 per song, and will include an extra copy for your PC.
