Rocking out to Guitar Hero with Verizon

Posted by Joe P on December 21, 2007

Just two days ago, Cooper talked about old school games for your cell phone. We got all nostalgic, to the point where we called up mom and asked if the old Nintendo was still in the attic. (It is, and we’re totally snagging it when we go home for Christmas.) While our heart lies in older games, we’re not completely shut out from the new slew of video games. In particular, we’re huge fans of Guitar Hero. Anyone who’s played it knows that it’s highly addicting. You might hate it at first, but once you beat three or four songs on expert, we can’t see anyone turning back. Anyway, following the release of Guitar Hero 3 on Playstations 2 and 3, XBox 360, and Wii, Activision has teamed with Hands-On Mobile and Verizon to bring you the game in mobile format. We do believe that we’ll see some significant finger-tapping on the bus next week.

Now, we have to admit, we’re not the biggest fans of the game’s third offering. While we go back and play the original Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 2, and Rock the 80s, we aren’t so much liking the gameplay of the the third.

(For starters, you can’t use a pick to hit the strum bar — though we’ve been told we’re very weird for using one.)

It does offer by far the best selection of songs, and yes, some of them are extremely fun to play. Particularly “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam and “Knights of Cydonia” by Muse.

Back to the mobile offering. You’ll get 15 songs selected from Guitar Hero 2 and Guitar Hero 3. While we can’t find a full listing, we’ve seen “Suck My Kiss” by Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Rock You Like A Hurricane” by The Scorpions — though “No One Like You” is way better. In addition, you’ll get new songs every month for the next year. They’ll feature four guitars and three venues, though we’re not concerned so much with the avatars. We’re concerned with rockin’ out!

It’s available on “an array” of Get It Now-capable phones, though Verizon doesn’t list all compatible devices. They do mention the MOTORIZR, the Chocolate, and the Samsung Gleam. It’ll cost you $4.49 for a monthly subscription, or $11.99 for unlimited use. We clearly think that the unlimited use is the better option.
