Verizon institutes 5 GB hard cap

Posted by Joe P on February 29, 2008

It’s been a strange trip for Verizon. First they say they have unlimited data. But then when some people mistakenly think that “unlimited” means “unlimited,” they’re booted off the Verizon network. Verizon gets sued, of course, for falsely advertising the plan, and pays out roughly a million in the process. So they become up front about their 5 GB soft cap on data. Well, now they’re putting that same 5 GB cap on their BroadBand Access plan, which covers people with wireless data cards. While before they’d just reduce your connection speed when you exceeded the cap, now it appears there will be a monetary penalty.

Now, I’m getting the information on the per-megabyte overage from IntoMobile. They’re saying that you’ll see a 49-cent charge for every MB over 5 gigs. Okay. Now, they refer to this press release for their information.

After looking through the release, I didn’t see anything that indicated a penalty for an overage. So you can take IntoMobile at their word, though I’d like to see more of a source on this one. Namely, Verizon themselves.

The release also talks about offering a 50-megabyte data plan for $39.99 in addition to the 5 GB plan for $59.99. Hello? Fifty megs for $40? Doesn’t that seem a bit…disproportional?

I honestly don’t know where this leaves everything. I pay $30 per month for my BlackBerry data plan. If I end up paying more, there will be hell to pay (since I just re-upped my contract).
