Mobile Notes: Glyde, GPS, Nokia E71, SMS Chat, Moto Q9c
Posted by Joe P on May 9, 2008
Lots of new phone information heading into the weekend. Verizon seems to be all over the new releases lately, dumping a whole slew of smartphones and PDAs on the market. There’s really only one problem with them: They’re not the iPhone, even though many of them pretend to be. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

What the major carriers are doing for Mother’s Day
Posted by Joe P on May 9, 2008
The day is fast approaching. And I’ll bet you haven’t gotten your dear old mother a gift for Mother’s Day yet. (Aside: I always thought it should be Mothers’ Day, no?) What better gift than a cell phone? Okay, I can think of a few, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. So, what are the major carriers offering up for their Mother’s Day promotions?

Mobile Notes, Verizon, T-Mobile, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, more
Posted by Joe P on May 8, 2008
I’ve got a number of things to share today, including a new feature that can help you if you’re taken downtown by the po-po. Not that you’d do anything that would get you into trouble with The Man. Just sayin’ is all.

GPS tracking? How about Bluetooth tracking
Posted by Joe P on May 8, 2008
We might have been donning the tinfoil hats with our recent GPS feature, but privacy is certainly a legitimate concern when it comes to location based services. Thing is, GPS might not be the most likely method to track you without your knowledge. We’ve long known that Bluetooth doesn’t provide very secure file transfers. It turns out, though, that it might be the easiest way to keep tabs on people. Excuse me while I go add another aluminum layer to my hat.

Mobile Notes: Cell reception, iPhone (!!), WiMAX, Philips
Posted by Joe P on May 7, 2008
As I was browsing the news yesterday, I started to get excited. Maybe there wouldn’t be anything substantial on the iPhone! It would be quite the day, let me tell you. But then I found something. It might not be deemed exactly substantial, but hey, what would Mobile Notes be without an iPhone mention?

Verizon responds to Google’s accusations
Posted by Joe P on May 7, 2008
It didn’t take long for the nation’s No. 2 wireless carrier to respond to accusations by Google. The Internet giant, which was essentially Verizon’s only competition for the C Block of the 700 MHz auction — even though Google was a token participant — claims that Verizon plans to ignore the open access provision attached to that block. Google wants the deal blocked until Verizon promises to completely uphold the agreement. Verizon responded yesterday, and were economical with their words.

Mobile Notes: Samsung, iPhone, T-Mobile, Sony Ericsson
Posted by Joe P on May 6, 2008
Not only do we have some (likely fake) iPhone news today, but we have further news of some iPhone bashing. And even further, we have some news from an iPhone competitor. And news from a carrier on which you can use an unlocked iPhone. One day, the mobile world will be engulfed by the iPhone. And we will all beg for its mercy.

Google chides Verizon over 700 MHz spectrum
Posted by Joe P on May 6, 2008
The auction bell has rung, the winners have been announce, and the communications embargo has been lifted. Yet, at least one company still wants to dispute the results of the 700 MHz auction. And wouldn’t you know, it’s Google, they of the open access provision. They’re arguing that Verizon essentially plans to ignore openness by applying their own brand of corporate logic. If Verizon plans to go ahead as planned, Google argues that they should not be awarded the valuable spectrum.
