NextWave looking to sell valuable spectrum

Posted by Joe P on April 25, 2008

The biggest complaint about the 700 MHz auction was that it didn’t create an entry opportunity for a new wireless carrier. With AT&T and Verizon controling such a large percentage of the market, the thinking is that another carrier might help level the playing field. I’m not quite sure about that, but we might be getting a fifth national carrier, anyway. San Diego-based NextWave is sitting on a decent amount of spectrum, and is looking to sell. You have to imagine, though, that the incumbent carriers are licking their lips at this opportunity.

Mobile advertising has no place to go but up

Posted by Joe P on April 24, 2008

Are you receptive to mobile advertising? A Nielsen surveys says that only 10 percent responded yes. And that really should come as no surprise. No one wants to see advertising. But we accept it as a means to free content. Just as we saw Internet advertising explode over the past few years, so we are going to see more and more advertising on our mobile phones. The obstacle standing in the way, really, is the penetration of mobile data usage in the U.S. Once that number begins to rise, we’ll certainly see an uptick in monetized content.

Mobile Notes: HTC, Android, Verizon, Alltel

Posted by Joe P on April 24, 2008

HTC seems to be gaining some traction, as they’ve had devices picked up by the major wireless carriers over the past year. We could be seeing some new offerings from them in the future. And it looks like another class-action for a couple of the big boys.

Comcast about to enter wireless industry?

Posted by Joe P on April 24, 2008

What does it mean when a company says that they plan to “explore wireless options”?. It would probably mean just that under normal circumstances. However, given that Comcast has ditched Pivot, their wireless service offering via Sprint, and that they have hired Dave Williams, former CTO of Telefonica O2 Europe, it seems that they’re pretty serious.

AT&T with another solid quarter

Posted by Joe P on April 23, 2008

The profits were way up: 22 percent up. But the real story is on the mobile end. I guess on this site, it always is. AT&T added 1.3 million wireless subscribers in the first quarter of 2007, just about in line with analysts’ predictions. They kept churn at a manageable 1.7 percent, which is right in line with last year. This, even with the loss of 330,000 customers who were still using analog. Ha! Only 330,000? That’s a drop in the bucket for AT&T’s over-70 million subscribers. So it seems that growth is now and in the future for AT&T.

Media can help you out of excessive cellphone bill

Posted by Joe P on April 22, 2008

In my daily web surfing, I came across an article in the New York Daily News titled, What to do about excessive phone bill charges. Great, I thought. Just the kind of thing I want to share with my readers. But as I read it, I realized that the writer, Asa Aarons, provided no real advice on how to deal with these situations. He mentioned that the victim, Shailesh Patel, called the company repeatedly, but received the same old response: “We are looking into it.” But in the end, Mr. Patel’s problem was solved. How so? It’s all about the power of the media.

Getting Connected With Fido

Posted by Stuart on April 21, 2008

There appears to be a growing trend in mobile communications that’s geared towards…pets. Mobile companies are trying to tap into the collective hive mind of pet owners, and skim some of the sweet profits from the top of that juicy barrel. And why not? With Americans spending an estimated $42 billion in 2007 on their pets is it any wonder that manufacturers want you to get your pets connected?
