GPS: Do you know who is tracking you?

Posted by Joe P on April 30, 2008

With 17 percent of U.S. adults owning a GPS unit as of August of last year — that’s about 40 million people — it seems we’re becoming keener to location-based technology. And increasingly, people are using this technology on their cell phones.

While only (approximately) 5.2 million Americans use GPS on their cell phones — with a greater number using them on PDA devices — more and more phones are being pumped out with embedded GPS chips. And with comprehensive service packages to provide location services, like TeleNav on AT&T, it seems like the cell phone may spur GPS technology even further.

Mobile Notes: iPhone, iPhone, iPhone

Posted by Joe P on April 30, 2008

A few iPhone notes for today. Seriously, this feels like deja vu all over again. The hype was hitting full force at this time last year, and it seems Apple is creating the same kind of buzz for the 3G iPhone. I tried to stay away from the topic over the winter, but it seems unavoidable at this point.

T-Mobile 3G network tomorrow?

Posted by Joe P on April 30, 2008

Well, T-Mobile said they’d roll out their 3G network this spring, and it looks like they’re going to come through. Rumor has it that May 1 is the date, which is tomorrow…which is pretty freakin’ neat. Of course, it’s not official. We’re still awaiting word from T-Mo themselves. TmoNews has a hard-copy clipping, so there could be an announcement this morning. I’ll update the post when it’s made.

Mobile Notes: Sidekick, Nokia, LG, Landlines

Posted by Joe P on April 29, 2008

So it seems that this TmoNews site is ready to put their credibility on the line. After launching earlier this month, they’ve brought us a slew of rumors. These are for the most part a month or so in the future, so their accuracy remains to be seen. But people are eating it up, so we might as well pass along the info. Trust me, we’ll be awaiting official announcements on the rumors they present.

Cell phones out in New York public schools

Posted by Joe P on April 29, 2008

How connected do you need to be to your high school aged child? Many parents apparently think the answer is “a lot connected.” See, after reports of harassment via cell phone, New York City schools banned cell phones from the premises. Not only does this put a stop to that specific brand of harassment, but it also curbs distracting in-class text messaging, as well as the potential to cheat using camera phones. But parents felt that they needed that always-on connection, and took the issue to court. And they lost. So the New York City school cell phone ban stays in place…for now.

Mobile IM might be more addicting than SMS

Posted by Joe P on April 28, 2008

Do you use mobile instant messaging? According to a study conducted from TNS Technology, if you do you probably use it as your primary form of text-based communication. Mobile instant message (MIM) users send fewer SMS than their non-MIM counterparts, and less fixed email as well. MIM users also seem more addicted to their chosen medium. Of those who use MIM, 61 percent use it daily, while only 55 percent use SMS daily. Just 12 percent use email on a daily basis.
