FCC gives Verizon the OK to acquire Rural Cellular
Posted by Joe P on August 5, 2008
It was over a year ago that Verizon announced that it would purchase Rural Cellular Corp. So what happened between then and now? Lots of oversight. First, the Department of Justice had to look at the deal to see if it violated any antitrust regulations. It turned out that Verizon had to divest interests in Vermont. Finally, earlier this month, the deal went through.
These divestments include areas in Vermont, Washington, and New York. I had heard from a friend that this included mainly landline and DSL services, not wireless properties. However, I have no way of confirming this, so take it with a grain of salt.
It’s unfortunate that we’re losing another regional carrier. These give consumers additional choices beyond Verizon. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. As we lose regional carriers, we give more power to the Big Four. It just seems that more choice is clearly the better idea in the wireless telecom industry.
