Verizon picks up new HTC smartphone

Posted by Joe P on January 8, 2008

Yesterday, we heard that Alltel was picking up an HTC device which competes with the iPhone. Today, we’re hearing that Verizon is picking up an HTC device, too, though not the Touch. C’mon; they already have the killer LG Voyager. This one they’ve branded on their own, though, the Verizon Wireless SMT5800. It looks like a mild-mannered, Nokia-esque candybar phone at first, but it slides up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard.

Verizon jumps into the mobile banking game

Posted by Joe P on January 4, 2008

If AT&T is doing it, you can be pretty sure that Verizon isn’t far off. About seven weeks ago, the nation’s largest carrier announced that they would be offering mobile banking services with partners including Wachovia, SunTrust, and America First Credit Union among others. Yesterday, Verizon announced that they’ll be doing the same — exactly the same. This is through the same exact company, Firethorn Holdings, a Qualcomm company.

Verizon customers hit with spam attack

Posted by Joe P on December 11, 2007

We’ve never seen a company so vigilant against spammers as Verizon Wireless. They’ve tracked down and sued many mass-spammers. In addition, they offer credits to customers who report receiving spam text messages, a feature either not available from other providers, or not widely publicized. However, sometimes these spam attacks get through, and that’s what happened to Connecticut subscribers on Monday.

Verizon introduces global roaming phone

Posted by Joe P on December 6, 2007

One of the biggest complaints about Verizon is that despite good domestic coverage, you simply can’t take your phone overseas. That’s because Verizon uses CDMA technology for their phones and network, which is limited, in essence, to the U.S. and Canada. The rest of the world uses GSM, which makes it easier for T-Mobile and AT&T customers to roam internationally — though having locked phones makes that a bit more difficult. Anyway, Verizon has introduced a phone that runs on CDMA technology in the States, but when you travel abroad, it switches over to GSM. Nifty, eh? So now Verizon customers can take their Motorola Z6c with them overseas and use it wherever Verizon has a roaming agreement.

AT&T, Verizon play nice in asset swap

Posted by Joe P on December 5, 2007

It’s nice to see when two stubborn brothers (or sisters, whichever you prefer) put their differences aside when they have problems that can be solved mutually. Earlier this year, AT&T purchased Dobson Communications, a rural cellular company, known to many as Cellular One. After that, Verizon bought Rural Cellular Corp. Both hit snags. AT&T had to divest some assets to make the Dobson purchase go through, and Verizon had problems of its own in Vermont. Now, the two can complete their purchases because of an overlapping agreement.

Verizon to adopt Android

Posted by Joe P on December 5, 2007

After Verizon announced an open handset initiative, the only logical step from that point was to join up with Google’s Open Handset Alliance, and adopt Android, their in-the-works open-source mobile operating system. While there was some question regarding Verizon’s intentions prior to yesterday, CEO Lowell McAdam made everything clear to BusinessWeek.

Get $200 off Verizon’s LG Voyager at Amazon

Posted by Joe P on November 27, 2007

Hey, we found a deal for y’all. Verizon’s “iPhone killer” (or whatever they’re calling it nowadays) has been released, and it’s creating a ton of buzz. A few friends of ours work at a Verizon store, and not only did they not get any of the initial shipment, but they were told that no Verizon stores had the devices for Black Friday (anyone want to debunk that?). Amazon has it, though, and cheaper than any retailer you’re going to find: $199. Of course, there are a few terms and conditions to abide by.

Verizon reps not familiar with company’s rates

Posted by Joe P on November 14, 2007

In what might be our favorite post of the year, Eyeless Writer has conducted an experiment with Verizon Wireless. He called them 56 times, asking two questions each time. 1) What is the data overage rates for the basic 10MB data package for $29.99, and 2) If you get the Core Choice 450 minutes package with unlimited data, what is the data roaming rate in Canada? And, well, it wouldn’t have been an interesting post if all 56 reps answered it accurately. It is a great post, though, because of the highly varied answers he did receive.
