Posted by Joe P on April 15, 2008

Are you the type that finds yourself tapping out text messages — whether SMS, email, or IM — more often than you do talk on the phone? If so, Verizon has a plan for you. The nation’s No. 2 wireless carrier has rolled out a series of Nationwide Messaging plans which fit all style of mobile messenger. Whether you have a consumer phone, smartphone, or BlackBerry, Verizon has a messaging plan for you. Each one comes with a per-minute voice rate — you know, in case you care to actually speak to people. But otherwise, you’re on your way to unlimited messaging.

Verizon finally matches others with data rates

Posted by Joe P on April 14, 2008

Verizon has long been reviled for its $45/month smartphone data plans. As Phone News notes, that caused many people to opt for a second device with Sprint’s SERO service, which is $30 per month for 500 minutes and unlimited data. However, with the HTC Touch — or the XV6900, as they’re calling it — the nation’s No. 2 wireless carrier has opted to drop their data prices to the level of their competitors. That is, $30 per month, which is what they normally charge for personal BlackBerry users.

Verizon offers environmentally-friendly tips

Posted by Joe P on April 11, 2008

Earth Day is coming up, and Verizon Wireless has some tips to help people who are “going green.” Of course, Earth Day is only the jumping off point. In order to make a real difference, we need to undertake these practices on a daily basis, not just on April 21st. Much of the advice from Verizon can be practiced year-round. It might seem like you’re not doing much, but anything you do is combined with what other people do, and that’s what makes the big difference.

Verizon taken to court on gambling claim

Posted by Joe P on March 26, 2008

It looks like Verizon is about to get into a game of: “What constitutes gambling?”. America’s No. 2 service provider, along with third-party content providers, are the defendants in a class-action suit, in which they are accused of enticing subscribers to gamble. The charge is related to premium text messaging contests on TV shows, like “Deal or No Deal” or “Sole Survivor,” where contestants answer questions via text message. A $0.99 charge is added to the texter’s cell phone bill, and if he gets the question right, only then is she entered into the lottery. The suit alleges that these are games of chance, and thereby gambling. I’ll let the suit explain it better:

Verizon playing ball at Spring Training

Posted by Joe P on February 18, 2008

I love baseball. It’s that simple. I follow my team every day of the year. I’m up on most of the other teams too. From April through October, my girlfriend hates me because I end up watching some 250 baseball games. So when there’s a baseball-related cell phone story, you’d better believe I’m all over it. Verizon is the subject today, as they’ve made their EV-DO Rev. A available to all Spring Training sites, whether in Florida for the Grapefruit League or Arizona for the Cactus League.

Class action filed against Verizon over ETFs

Posted by Joe P on January 29, 2008

So apparently consumers can win in arbitration hearings. A potential $1 billion class action suit is set to move forward, thanks to a ruling by Eugene Farber, a senior arbitrator-mediator for the American Arbitration Association. The class, which at 70 million is the largest ever certified in arbitration, is disputing early termination fees they were assessed by the company. These fees are being deemed “illegal” by plaintiffs’ council, Scott Bursor. This I’m having trouble wrapping my head around.

Verizon announces fourth quarter results

Posted by Joe P on January 28, 2008

No, it wasn’t a record-breaking quarter for Verizon. No, they did not gain on their chief rival, AT&T. No, they’re not crossing the 70-million subscriber threshold anytime in the near future. But Verizon did have themselves a solid fourth quarter, adding two million customers amid the holiday blitz. This is a tick higher than the 1.85 million net additions predicted by analysts. Of course, good times might not be extending that far into the future.

Verizon hosting “Open Development” conference

Posted by Joe P on January 23, 2008

To go along with their pledge of a more open network, Verizon is going to host an Open Development conference in March. This will give handset creators the opportunity to learn about the standards their devices will have to uphold in order to be accepted on the Verizon network. Some may question, then, if this is really “open.” I just think it’s a step in the right direction.

Verizon buys network in northern California

Posted by Joe P on January 23, 2008

If you’re a subscriber of SureWest Wireless in northern California, prepare to meet your new cell provider: Verizon. They’ve agreed to purchase the regional operator’s wireless assets for $69 million. From seeing similar deals and the money involved, it doesn’t appear that SureWest has much of an established network. True to that, they have just 50,000 subscribers, so for a megapower like Verizon, it’s a drop in the bucket subscriber-wise.

Verizon offering unlimited data again?

Posted by Joe P on January 17, 2008

Back in October, Verizon settled a lawsuit regarding their unlimited data offering. It was advertised as just that — unlimited. However, many users were being stripped of their Verizon accounts because they were exceeding a “soft cap” of 5 GB per month. This wasn’t advertised anywhere, not even the terms of service. So a judge ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, and Verizon not only had to shell out over a million bucks, but they had to enter the soft cap in the TOS. It’s still there, but at least one user is still seeing “Unlimited MB Allowance” on his bill.
