Forget Verizon: Try Sprint/Nextel/T-Mobile
Posted by Joe P on March 7, 2008
So last week we explored the virtues of Verizon acquiring Sprint Nextel. It would make some degree of sense, but in the long run it appears that Verizon can pick off a number of Sprint subscribers free of charge. Hence, they probably don’t have a ton of incentive to make the multi-billion dollar investment that would be required of this deal. However, today we’re hearing, via analysts from Merrill Lynch, that T-Mobile could be the most likely company to take over Sprint. The Lynch guys think that this could avert a price war among the top mobile carriers. Sprint might have instigated one last week when they announced an all-in unlimited plan.

T-Mobile posts fourth quarter, 2007 results
Posted by Joe P on February 28, 2008
Year-end reporting tends to come late. This is because not only is the company working on its fourth quarter data, but they’ve got to assemble a report for the year as a whole. We’re seeing many of these announcements come in this week, more than halfway through the first quarter of 2008. T-Mobile is our target today, the nation’s No. 4 wireless carrier. We know they’re not catching Sprint anytime soon, but making up any kind of ground is good for them at this point. Then again, that’s not very tough, considering Sprint is losing customers. So did T-Mo put up a positive mark?

T-Mobile offers complete home, mobile phone package
Posted by Joe P on February 21, 2008
In the middle of last year, T-Mobile launched HotSpot @Home, a service that focused on making calls from your cell phone which are routed over the Internet, rather than T-Mo’s GSM network. This was greeted with much hoopla. There was the positive: No more wasting money on a home phone. And there was the negative: You had to buy a new handset to take advantage of the service. And it was $20 per month, which is around or just slightly less than many home phone services. Now, though, T-Mo has made efforts to vastly improve the service. In fact, if their test run works, you truly could use it to completely replace your landline.

T-Mo eyeing summer for 3G launch
Posted by Joe P on February 19, 2008
Our long wait might be coming to an end. T-Mobile, long rumored to be rolling out a 3G network, has said they hope to have it fully operational by summer. Of course, this was an inevitability. T-Mo won an auction back in 2006 that allowed them to launch a third generation offering. They had planned to do it in September of last year, even offering an initial phone that works on it. However, the previous occupants were and still are taking their time getting off the airwaves, thus delaying T-Mobile’s plans. But things seem to be in order now, so you can use that selection of 3G phones — there are three now, I believe — to their full capability in the near future.

T-Mo continues to top customer service ranks
Posted by Joe P on February 1, 2008
Amid a class action lawsuit over unsolicited text messages, T-Mobile could use some good news. They got it in the form of a J.D. Power and Associates survey of the wireless industry. And for the seventh consecutive survey, T-Mo came out on top in the customer service department. Can’t say I disagree. I’ve never had a problem calling them to get information. Then again, I’m not a customer calling who has a problem with his service or bill. So customer service, knowing I won’t cost them any money, is always nice to me.

T-Mo picks up 3G handset, rumors of another
Posted by Joe P on January 22, 2008
No, T-Mobile has no unveiled their 3G network yet. And it’s probably eating them up inside. They’ve already launched two devices for it, and a rumored launch date has come and passed. Well, here’s the third in the series: The newly FCC-approved Samsung t819. It’s a nifty slider with a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD, BlueTooth — all the standard accoutrements. The only issue is that it currently only runs on EDGE.

T-Mo spending money to make money
Posted by Joe P on January 10, 2008
T-Mobile is concerned. See, they’re doing rather well as far as subscribers go. They keep adding and adding, and although they’re still significantly behind Sprint, the nation’s No. 3 wireless carrier, they’re steadily gaining ground, while Sprint loses it. Their concern is with investors, who might not see a tidy number under the company’s profit column. This is because they’re out spending money on improvements, in hopes that this investment pays off at a later date. But for the time being, we can expect to see narrow profit margins for the nation’s No. 4 wireless carrier.

T-Mo quashes activation fee for 2007
Posted by Joe P on December 28, 2007
For the next four days, you can activate a T-Mobile account for free. We’re not exactly sure why, but from today, December 28, through midnight on December 31, you can pick out a T-Mobile plan and phone, sign a contract, and not have to pay the $35 activation fee. It’s a nice gesture from T-Mo, though we’re not sure how many people are ready to make a two-year commitment decision in the span of four days. But if it nets them a few new subscribers, then good for them.

T-Mobile and a 3G network…in Europe
Posted by Joe P on December 20, 2007
As we wait patiently here in the U.S. for T-Mobile’s 3G network (December 6 has come and gone), the company is busy working on their 3G network overseas. They’ve combined forces with 3 (yes, the company is called, simply, 3) to enhance the quality of service and coverage areas for both companies. They are dubbing it the “world’s largest known active 3G network sharing agreement.”

Telus sued over “My Faves”
Posted by Joe P on December 19, 2007
We’ve recently been browsing around Canadian cell phone providers to get a feel for the landscape up North. It’s definitely a ton different than it is in the U.S., and by different we mean more expensive. One thing we noticed was that one of Canada’s Big Three, Telus, had a calling plan called My Faves. Strange, we thought, T-Mobile has the same thing here. We wonder if they’re in cahoots. Turns out, they’re not, and T-Mobile has filed suit over Telus’s usage of the phrase.
