Movie Rentals on the Go

Posted by Stuart on May 28, 2008

You’ve probably seen a few iPhone owners with their smug little faces watching videos on that sexy 3.5 inch screen and you’ve probably been enthralled by the quality of that display. Although it does looks great it’s still a tiny screen and if you don’t have a iPhone, the chances are you have a much smaller screen. So who in their right mind is prepared to sit in front on a small handheld device for two hours and expect to be blown away by a cinematic masterpiece like, say, The Butterfly Effect starring the granny loving Aston Kutcher? Idiots and morons, that’s who!

Most consumers unaware of what their wireless company offers

Posted by Joe P on April 11, 2008

As we learned yesterday, not many people are using the multimedia functions on their phones. In fact, just 4.2 percent of cellphone owners have watched video on their phones. It seems that with widely-advertised services like Verizon’s VCAST and AT&T’s mediaFLO, you’d have more people accessing these features. After all, they have roughly 130 million customers between them. But it turns out that 47 percent of people don’t even know whether their carrier offers mobile TV and video services.

Bell Mobility teams with HBO for premium content

Posted by Joe P on April 2, 2008

A little news from up North. Bell Mobility, one of the three major Canadian wireless providers, has teamed with HBO to provide on-demand content. This means full episodes, plus ringtones, wallpapers, and mobile games in the near future. The service launched today, so if you’re a Bell subscriber, or you know someone who does, let ‘em know. It sounds like an excellent partnership — which hopefully will be made with more and more carriers.

AT&T set to launch mobile TV service in May

Posted by Joe P on March 28, 2008

There was plenty of talk about mobile TV offerings following the close of the 700 MHz auction. Specifically, it was about EchoStar, which got a huge chunk of the E-Block, and of Qualcomm, which is thought to be using the spectrum to beef up its MediaFLO offering. Even though the spectrum won’t be available for another year or so, MediaFLO is already getting the wheels in motion. They’re partnering with AT&T for a mobile TV service, which is set to launch in May. This will give the nation’s No. 1 carrier a platform on which to compete with Verizon’s VCAST offering.

Posted by Joe P on March 27, 2008

It’s like YouTube on your cell phone! Alltel announced yesterday a service called Alltel Social Video. It does pretty much what you’d expect. Users with video phones can upload, share, view, and rate videos “from a wide range of online outlets.” It’s the latest effort by Alltel to reach a younger audience. In addition to their expanded My Circle plans, they’ve also started to offer a celebrity voicemail service, and announced a partnership with online music service Pandora. This move is a collaboration with Transpera, a “leading provider of mobile phone video services.”

YouTube to be available on more phones

Posted by Joe P on January 24, 2008

For a while, YouTube had an exclusive partnership with Verizon Wireless which allowed their subscribers to view a limited library. Then came the iPhone, which opened up YouTube’s catalogue to the masses. That might have started a craze: The Google subsidiary is aiming to get their services on a ton of handsets in the near future, with the hope of soon reaching 100 million mobile consumers.

Experiencing video streams on your cell phone

Posted by Joe P on January 24, 2008

If someone had suggested 10 years ago that we’d soon be watching videos on small, portable devices — possibly even our mobile phones — he or she would have heard a lot of “Yeah, right” responses. Maybe in some far-flung future where we all ride hoverboards, live off nuclear energy, and wear weird-looking yet functional sunglasses. But over the course of the next decade? Pshaw! Yet here we are, in 2008, and we have this slew of smartphones that are perfectly capable of broadcasting streaming video. Hell, the major carriers even have services where you can watch video on your non-smartphone.
