What everyone ought to know about sharing mobile content
Posted by Joe P on June 26, 2008
How many of you share your media files in a peer to peer environment? Considering it accounts for roughly 70 percent of Internet traffic, it’s safe to say that a healthy population of ‘net users love them some P2P. It has become one of the most efficient forms of mass content distribution over the past few years, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Except, of course, when Comcast throttles BitTorrent, or ACTA tries to outlaw P2P altogether. Where we should see P2P really start to expand is on mobile phones.

“Miles To Go” app helps keep lease fees in check
Posted by Joe P on June 17, 2008
Anyone out there leasing a car? If so, an application which costs $3 might end up saving you a thousand times that amount. RiffWare has announced the availability of Miles To Go through Verizon’s Get It Now platform. The premise is simple. When you lease a car, you have a mileage limit. Problem is, it’s tough to gauge your usage of those miles. Yes, you have the odometer, but that doesn’t tell you your current pace. Miles To Go will analyze your driving habits, and let you know if you’re in danger of running up milage fees on your lease, which can run 10 to 25 cents a mile. Go even a few hundred miles over, and it can add up.

Getting email access without a smartphone
Posted by Joe P on June 4, 2008
When people talk about receiving emails on their cell phone, they’re usually talking about a smartphone. You know, BlackBerry, Palm Treo, Windows Mobile devices, the iPhone. But with the average price of these devices coming in at over $200, not everyone can have the privilege of owning one. Thankfully, more options are becoming available for not-so-smart phones (it sounds better than dumb phones). I’ve recently stumbled across two such options: TeleFlip, and a new push email program from Verizon.

Mobile IM might be more addicting than SMS
Posted by Joe P on April 28, 2008
Do you use mobile instant messaging? According to a study conducted from TNS Technology, if you do you probably use it as your primary form of text-based communication. Mobile instant message (MIM) users send fewer SMS than their non-MIM counterparts, and less fixed email as well. MIM users also seem more addicted to their chosen medium. Of those who use MIM, 61 percent use it daily, while only 55 percent use SMS daily. Just 12 percent use email on a daily basis.

How your mobile phone can save your life in an emergency
Posted by Joe P on April 16, 2008
You’re in an accident and have been rendered unconscious. Paramedics are summoned to the scene. What’s the first thing they look for? Wallet, keys, cellphone (kind of like my checklist when I leave the house). What are they looking for there? Any information which may be vital to your treatment. And the more information a first responder has, the better you will be served. Unfortunately, I don’t know many people who carry around medical information in their wallet. So MyRapidMD is targeting another part of your repertoire: Your cell phone. Their Emergency Service Profile (ESP) application can give first responders the information they need to potentially save your life.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of Urban World Wireless
Posted by Joe P on April 15, 2008
We’ve been exploring mobile content for the past few weeks on Going Cellular. If nothing else, one thing has been made clear: Mobile content is still in its infancy. Growth is starting to accelerate, though. We’re seeing more and more people on data plans. Revenue from wireless data totaled $23 billion in 2007, a 53 percent increase over 2006. And with the rising use of mobile data, we’re seeing more and more content providers come to the table. They’ll see a larger market share in years to come. While 80 percent of mobile content is currently purchased through carrier web portals, Strategy Analytics predicts that it will fall to 25 percent in five years. So third party content providers have plenty to look forward to. Today we take a look at one of those content providers: UrbanWorld Wireless.

FCC proposes emergency text alerts
Posted by Joe P on April 10, 2008
Well, now that we know that about two-thirds of cellphone owners use SMS in some capacity or another, shouldn’t we figure out how to take advantage of that? No, I’m not talking about bothersome ads or other monetization schemes. I’m talking about using SMS as a public safety measure. And that’s what the FCC is set to propose today. It will be on an opt-in basis, and will cover three types of events.

Yahoo! announces oneSearch speech recognition
Posted by Joe P on April 2, 2008
A few months ago, we talked about how Yahoo! Go can enhance your mobile internet experience. Today, they took that a step further, with the announcement of oneSearch 2.0. The overall idea is to provide better answers through search, as opposed to traditional search results consisting of web links. To accomplish this, Yahoo! is opening up to publishers, allowing them to integrate their relevant content that will provide consumers with highly relevant, targeted information that addresses the intent of the search.
