AT&T doesn’t need no stinkin’ Open Handset Alliance

…because they’re already an open network, according to them. AT&T customers can use any wireless phone, device, or software application from any maker — once again, according to the company. We’d like to hear some success and failure stories before we go touting AT&T as an open GSM network. Even so, it opens their network to what? Phones from T-Mobile? We expect that foreign GSM users traveling to the U.S. will be appreciative, but we’re not sure how much of an effect they have on the overall cellular landscape. But, openness is good, and we’re going to give AT&T a temporary thumbs up for the move.

AT&T, Verizon play nice in asset swap
Posted by Joe P on December 5, 2007
It’s nice to see when two stubborn brothers (or sisters, whichever you prefer) put their differences aside when they have problems that can be solved mutually. Earlier this year, AT&T purchased Dobson Communications, a rural cellular company, known to many as Cellular One. After that, Verizon bought Rural Cellular Corp. Both hit snags. Notably absent from the Alliance are the nation’s two top carriers: AT&T and Verizon (”hint: both companies are doing just fine with their current business models,” says EPICENTER). Well, it appears that AT&T is coming forward a bit more with its reason for reluctance.
