AT&T has big 3G plans in 2008

Posted by Joe P on February 11, 2008

If the AT&T service in your area doesn’t include 3G service, well, it might soon. AT&T is going to lengths this year to bring the high-speed wireless data service to more and more cities. Right now, they’re looking at 80 over the course of the year, which is (obviously) more than one per week. This will bring AT&T’s total 3G coverage to around 350 major U.S. cities. This will not only bring a higher level of service to a greater coverage area, but will lay the groundwork for their 4G network, which will utilize LTE technology.

AT&T ready to drop 16 GB iPhone

Posted by Joe P on February 5, 2008

I’ve had plenty of friends ask me recently, “So, when are we going to see a next generation iPhone?” Most of them are of the cautious ilk, and avoided the first generation iPhone, noting that it’s probably buggier than people are willing to admit. More than a handful said they wouldn’t pay $399 for a device that ran on EDGE. This rumor, while regarding a new iPhone, doesn’t address the 3G or second-gen issue. Rather, it’s a capacity thing. Rumors are hitting the Internets that a 16 GB iPhone will drop in the next week or so. This morning, CNet confirmed it.

AT&T data outage in Southeast and Midwest

Posted by Joe P on February 1, 2008

Mobile outages are always a big deal. And with the heavy reliance on mobile data in business, outages are not only an inconvenience, but potentially a loss of money. So strange that five, six years ago, little thought was given to having mobile employees who were perpetually connected. Now it’s taken for granted. And that’s why these outages are so disruptive. That they last all day is even more frustrating. So you can imagine how the affected AT&T customers felt when their network started bombing at around 6:30 a.m. and didn’t get back online until around 4 p.m.

Missed this one from earlier in the week. AT&T has announced a deal with the New York Times that will allow them to offer their subscribers exclusive access to the New York Times on their phones. This feature allows for access to the New York Times’ entire mobile portal. This signals a further shift towards the use of Internet on phones. AT&T offering Enterprise for iPhone

Posted by Joe P on January 22, 2008

There’s been plenty of debate in the business domain regarding the viability of the iPhone. Yeah, it’s an awesome consumer product, but can it have the same place in the business world as the BlackBerry? Most of my corporate friends say no, that there are far too many security issues. That’s followed up by, “And dude, there’s no Enterprise to go along with it.” Well, the latter argument just went out the door, as AT&T has announced pricing for Enterprise data plans for iPhones.

AT&T to can unlimited data plans

Posted by Joe P on January 14, 2008

Late last year, Verizon lost a lawsuit regarding their unlimited data plans. They advertised them as unlimited, and nowhere was there any notation of any limits on a data account. Behind company walls, though, Verizon was jettisoning subscribers who routinely exceeded 5 GB monthly. They shelled out over a million in the settlement. AT&T isn’t going to make the same mistake. Apparently, their data plan is unlimited — or should I say, was unlimited. Beginning January 20, they’re rumored to be setting a cap of 5 GB on data plans, whether through a smartphone or a laptop data card.

AT&T picks up coverage in West Virginia

Posted by Joe P on January 7, 2008

Which is the most neglected state? Growing up, I always thought Wyoming. After all, do you know anyone who has been to the state? I didn’t for quite a while — a friend actually suggested that because he didn’t know anyone who had been to the state, it very well might not exist. Ah, but then you have the Grant Tetons and Yellowstone, so there’s some fame to it. The list now stands at North Dakota and West Virginia, though many people know WV because of their football team. AT&T isn’t neglecting them, either, as they’ve acquired Easterbrooke Cellular Corporation, which provides coverage for the Mountaineers.

AT&T offers driving safety tips

Posted by Joe P on December 28, 2007

A car is a difficult machine to operate. It’s infinitely more difficult if your attention is divided while operating it. Yes, we’re talking about talking on your cell phone and driving, one of our pet peeves. Yeah, they have those nifty ear pieces now, and that makes it a bit safer, but we continue to see people yakking straight into their handsets. AT&T is reminding everyone of their Be Sensible campaign, which discourages phone use while driving. Here are their cell phone related tips for the New Year:

AT&T to help the homeless

Posted by Joe P on December 21, 2007

So we figured we’d break for the Christmas holiday with a feel-good story. The St. Anthony Foundation in San Francisco is teaming up with AT&T to provide free phone calls to the homeless in the area. AT&T will set up shop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the foundation’s headquarters, and will have 20 domestic and 10 international phones available, at no cost to the homeless (can you imagine if they tried to charge even a minimal fee?). We hope that refreshments will be served as well.
