Limited trade-in for 3G iPhones
Posted by Joe P on June 12, 2008
If you bought a regular-old, crappy original iPhone after May 27, you must have impulses the likes of which have never been seen. At that point, it was all but a certainty that the 3G iPhone would be announced on June 9. But hey, some people don’t spend their days reading blogs, so they might not have been in the know. Those unlucky folks, though, will get a break, as they can trade in their model to get a snazzy new 3G iPhone. Not only that, but they’ll also get a refund for the price difference. May 27 seems reasonable enough; two weeks before the announcement, minus a day because of the Memorial Day holiday.
AT&T has fastest 3G network, will speed up more
Posted by Joe P on May 19, 2008
What’s faster, 3G GSM or EVDO? I’ve always wondered that myself, and have basically been resigned to the fact that it’s going to vary by region. Apparently, Computer World wasn’t satisfied with that answer. They went out and tested the 3G networks of AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. So who came out on top? I guess you’ll have to find out after the jump.

AT&T with another solid quarter
Posted by Joe P on April 23, 2008
The profits were way up: 22 percent up. But the real story is on the mobile end. I guess on this site, it always is. AT&T added 1.3 million wireless subscribers in the first quarter of 2007, just about in line with analysts’ predictions. They kept churn at a manageable 1.7 percent, which is right in line with last year. This, even with the loss of 330,000 customers who were still using analog. Ha! Only 330,000? That’s a drop in the bucket for AT&T’s over-70 million subscribers. So it seems that growth is now and in the future for AT&T.

AT&T released application developer kits
Posted by Joe P on March 14, 2008
Following in the footsteps of top rival Verizon, AT&T has announced that they, too, will encourage third party programmers to develop applications for their network. Yesterday, they released Universal Design documents, which detail how to create applications for the company. They feel that by taking this tack, they will be able to harness the power of outside developers while still creating applications that their customers desire. This continues the trend towards openness that we’ve seen recently in the wireless world. Verizon actually takes the idea a step further, as they are allowing third party developers to create phones for their network.

AT&T partners with NCAA for March Madness
Posted by Joe P on March 13, 2008
Seriously, this might be the best time of the year. The weather is getting a bit warmer (depending on where you live, I guess), baseball is getting ready for seven months of glory, and of course, college basketball is set for its yearly tournament. The field of 64 is nearly ready for action, and AT&T is determined to bring you top-notch coverage on your mobile phone. They’ve partnered with NCAA to bring you closer to the action. Through their March Madness portal, AT&T and the NCAA give you the ability to watch video highlights of the games, as well as help select the winner of the 2008 Naismith Trophy, the award for best men’s and women’s college basketball players of the year.

iPhone now unlimited, too!
Posted by Joe P on March 10, 2008
It’s just an unlimited kinda day here at Going Cellular. Speaking of, did you know that there’s unlimited browsing of our archives for free? Yeah. No kidding. Anyway — and this is news to me — before Friday or Saturday, you couldn’t use that unlimited calling plan from AT&T on your iPhone. Seriously. You could have spent $400 on your iPhone, and been told “no, you can’t get that calling plan for this phone.” Where’s the justice in that? Well, now you can. And guess what? It’s exactly what you’d expect.

AT&T has big 3G plans in 2008
Posted by Joe P on February 11, 2008
If the AT&T service in your area doesn’t include 3G service, well, it might soon. AT&T is going to lengths this year to bring the high-speed wireless data service to more and more cities. Right now, they’re looking at 80 over the course of the year, which is (obviously) more than one per week. This will bring AT&T’s total 3G coverage to around 350 major U.S. cities. This will not only bring a higher level of service to a greater coverage area, but will lay the groundwork for their 4G network, which will utilize LTE technology.

AT&T ready to drop 16 GB iPhone
Posted by Joe P on February 5, 2008
I’ve had plenty of friends ask me recently, “So, when are we going to see a next generation iPhone?” Most of them are of the cautious ilk, and avoided the first generation iPhone, noting that it’s probably buggier than people are willing to admit. More than a handful said they wouldn’t pay $399 for a device that ran on EDGE. This rumor, while regarding a new iPhone, doesn’t address the 3G or second-gen issue. Rather, it’s a capacity thing. Rumors are hitting the Internets that a 16 GB iPhone will drop in the next week or so. This morning, CNet confirmed it.

AT&T data outage in Southeast and Midwest
Posted by Joe P on February 1, 2008
Mobile outages are always a big deal. And with the heavy reliance on mobile data in business, outages are not only an inconvenience, but potentially a loss of money. So strange that five, six years ago, little thought was given to having mobile employees who were perpetually connected. Now it’s taken for granted. And that’s why these outages are so disruptive. That they last all day is even more frustrating. So you can imagine how the affected AT&T customers felt when their network started bombing at around 6:30 a.m. and didn’t get back online until around 4 p.m.

This feature allows for access to the New York Times’ entire mobile portal. This signals a further shift towards the use of Internet on phones.
