AT&T data outage in Southeast and Midwest

Posted by Joe P on February 1, 2008

Mobile outages are always a big deal. And with the heavy reliance on mobile data in business, outages are not only an inconvenience, but potentially a loss of money. So strange that five, six years ago, little thought was given to having mobile employees who were perpetually connected. Now it’s taken for granted. And that’s why these outages are so disruptive. That they last all day is even more frustrating. So you can imagine how the affected AT&T customers felt when their network started bombing at around 6:30 a.m. and didn’t get back online until around 4 p.m.

Many times, these outages can be traced to Research In Motion, the maker of business’s most popular smartphone, the BlackBerry. They’ve been the source of a number of outages, including one in early 2007 which was the result of a software upgrade. That one, though, didn’t affect business hours as much as this one did.

In any event, this one hasn’t been traced back to RIM. AT&T’s iPhones weren’t working as well, so this is really an AT&T issue. It affected both of their data platforms, EDGE and their 3G service.

But everything is back to normal now.
