Alltel picks up iPhone killer

Posted by Joe P on January 7, 2008

Honestly, there are few terms that irk me more than “iPhone killer.” Yet I continue to use it in a mocking way, because there simply is no device that can “kill” the iPhone. Apple did a superb job of marketing it, and no matter how many people rail against it, their market is already entrenched. In fact, people who speak of the flaws of the iPhone might actually be drawing people closer to the device. That’s how attached people are to this idea. And really, that’s what Apple did: they hyped the idea of the iPhone, and ingrained it in everyone’s heads. Anyway, this brings us to the HTC Touch, introduced by Sprint in 2007, and en route to Alltel.

When the device was announced by Sprint, I was a bit skeptical. After all, I’ve had knock-offs of Apple products before (i.e., the Creative Zen in favor of the iPod), and have ended up wholly disappointed. Yes, Apple has their own flaws, and plenty of people have had their share of iPod problems. But it seems that the imitation devices just don’t stack up to the original.

I’ve never used the HTC Touch, so I’ll reserve judgement on the phone. But color me skeptical. It makes enough sense for Alltel, though. They need to keep the pace with smart phones, and the HTC seems like the top-of-the-line for the CDMA breed — though the LG Voyager, available exclusively through Sprint, seems a worthy competitor.

It’ll cost you $200 for a new or renewed two-year contract, or $500 a la carte. Since the difference in price is greater than what you’ll pay in early termination fees, we can’t argue against the two-year contract in this case.
